Why do we need to even have a toolbox? Well, you probably are listening to this podcast because you want to create amazing visualizations, right? Ones that convey your data in the best way and convince people to take actions, right? But creating an amazing, stunning visualization is actually really hard.

So before we talk about how to fill your data viz toolbox, let's ask why. So you can be strategic about filling yours in the new year.
So this episode I'm going to share with you nine of my favorite visualizations that I featured on my podcast and how each one helped give me a structure to my toolbox. How do you think that will affect your intention for the new year? One small thing that you can be doing throughout the year that will make you a better information designer and not drive you crazy is focus on filling up your data viz toolbox with one small exercise that I'll talk about later, I learned this exercise by creating these past 50 episodes and filling my toolbox is something that will never be complete.Īlli Torban: 03:10 And the more I fill it, the easier my job gets. So what do you think, what season are you in mining, refining, or shining. But honestly, connecting people to wonder is something that I'm still a little fuzzy on. We connect people to other people, to places, to ideas and to wonder.
My last episode we talked about how visualizing data has value because we create connections that weren't there before. I want to be not so laser focused on data viz and dabble more in other interests, like writing, drawing, baking. So instead of rigid goals, I want to make more or less goals where I have more of something in my life or less of something in my life.Īlli Torban: 02:04 So in 2020 I want less blinders. So I want to give myself a little bit more space to create. I feel like last year I was in more of a mining phase and now I'm in a refining phase. But if you're feeling like doing that, great, you're in that season. And thinking of my career in seasons mining, refining, shining, it makes me feel a little bit less guilty about not wanting to set specific, actionable, go get them goals this year. But basically you have a season of mining where you're gathering information influences and then a season of refining using what you've learned, honing your skills, and then a season of shining where you share what you've created. You can listen back to to the episode this time last year for that, but this year I honestly am not really feeling that.on my favorite podcast called Creative Pep Talk with Andy J Pizza.Īlli Torban: 01:05 He talks about how every creative career has seasons and how long those seasons last is different for every person. Speaking of improving, we are about to start the new year and I was thinking about this time last year and I was all excited to write down specific actionable goals. So I'm glad you're here and I hope these stories over the past couple of years have really helped you improve. I started this podcast in March, 2018 to help me learn information design and bring along as many people as I could and helped me not only start a career in data viz but make so many relationships with people like you. This is a really special episode because I'm going to share with you the top nine episodes that really helped me shape how I visualize data. I'm Alli Torban and I bring you data viz inspiration and actionable tips by featuring a creative project. Gang Green more than made up for it in 2022 with three major additions in Uzomah, Tyler Conklin, and Jeremy Ruckert.Last year’s final episode about setting goalsĮpisode 2 with Nadieh Bremer and Zan ArmstrongĪlli Torban: 00:00 Hey, you're listening to episode 50 of Data Viz Today. It is a foundational piece of this Jets offense with Mike LaFleur, yet they ignored the position last year. The one thing we do know is the Jets’ tight end room which has been a weakness for a very long time is now a strength. Who the heck knows, but for the first time in a long time, there is optimism and smiles going around. Will that result in a playoff appearance? A winning record? Absolutely nothing? However, there seems to be a belief in the locker room that something special is cooking. That dark cloud hanging over the team hasn’t helped make things all peaches and rainbows. The Jets haven’t been good over the last 11 years. It may be completely prisoner of the moment, but the vibes around this team and the apparent chemistry between teammates feel different.
